Amsterdam tech events this week: 200 people sold out an AI meetup, and the follow-on is free (4–10 Sep 2026)

Last week we called Amsterdam's calendar a scheduling conflict with catering — four events between 17:00 and 19:00 on one Thursday, in four parts of town. This week does the opposite: five tech events across four days, and the only two sharing a date are seven hours apart. You can have all of it. The more interesting question is what last Thursday told us about what comes next.

Last week: 200 tickets, gone

AI Native Netherlands #11 — Engineering with AI Agents sold out. Two hundred capacity at Buro de Pijp, Cloudflare sponsoring, doors at 18:00 and talks from 18:30 — Raul Tavares, Senior Solutions Engineer at Cloudflare, on moving from building agents to orchestrating them. Free, and closed before the day arrived.

Two hundred people giving up a Thursday for production engineering with agents is not a meetup statistic, it is a hiring-market signal — and it happened alongside three other events, so the demand was for that specific room. Carry one thing forward: this week's nearest equivalent is free, still open, and on Wednesday.

The Big One: the ex-CEO of ASML on what education is for now

Peter Wennink (former CEO of ASML) — Panel on The Role of Education in a Time of Rapid AI Change | AISO Opening Night 2026/27 — Tuesday 8 September, 18:30–22:00, Roeterseiland Campus, University of Amsterdam. Free.

AISO opens its academic year with the man who ran the most strategically significant company in the Netherlands, on a panel about whether education is still producing the skills that matter. Wennink was asked by the Schoof cabinet in September 2025 to write an independent advisory report on the Dutch position, so this is not a retired executive on an anecdote tour.

It takes top billing on calibre and on stake. Free access to that seniority is rare, and a student society is putting it on rather than a conference charging for it. Amsterdam also has a particular interest in the answer: a tech economy running on imported talent, with a semiconductor supply chain an hour down the road. A panel on skills here is a panel on the next decade of hiring.

The week ahead: two rooms arguing, three rooms working

Arguing about it. Beyond Tuesday's panel, Soup Talks | The Human Advantage in the Age of AI: An Insider's View (Wednesday 9 September, 11:30–13:30, Hatch on Sumatrakade, free) sits down with Bob van Luijt, co-founder and CEO of Weaviate, on where human judgement still wins. Weaviate is one of the most consequential open-source companies out of the Netherlands, so "an insider's view" is doing honest work in that title. First edition, and waitlist-only — see below.

Doing the work. Mindstone Amsterdam September AI Meetup (Wednesday 9 September, 18:00–21:00, Maarten Luther Kerk in Rivierenbuurt, free) is the applied counterweight: people demonstrating what they built, what worked and what did not. No papers, no roadmaps.

Type Erasure Case Study & Constexpr Debugger (Friday 4 September, 18:00–22:00, JetBrains Amsterdam at Terrace Tower in Zuid, free) is The Dutch C++ Group with speakers from Think-Cell and JetBrains. Pizza and networking from 18:00, talks from 19:00 — deep systems content, and a reminder that not every evening here has to be about agents.

Streaming Made Easy Live 2026 (Thursday 10 September, 12:00–21:00, Rode Hoed, €399) closes the week with a full day of media technology, timed to land right before IBC. The organisers' premise is blunt: five years of firefighting made the streaming industry excellent at reacting and worse at building.

Organiser spotlight: Mindstone

The same monthly applied-AI format now runs across eight cities, and the Amsterdam edition is the largest of its kind here. It travels because it asks for demos rather than speakers — a talk needs a name, a demo just needs somebody who built something last month. Mindstone are also openly inviting people to speak, sponsor or host in their own city, which makes Wednesday the lowest-friction stage in Amsterdam if you shipped something this quarter.

Who should go where

Builders and engineers — Wednesday evening, Mindstone. If your work is systems rather than models, Friday at JetBrains instead: one of the few rooms in town where the conversation is about the language, not the hype cycle.

Founders — Wednesday, both halves if you can get in. Soup Talks at lunch is founder-to-founder with a Weaviate-shaped example at the front; Mindstone in the evening has the people who can build what you are describing.

Investors — thin for structured dealflow: no pitch night, no demo day. Tuesday's panel carries the strategic signal; Mindstone has the technical founders.

Students and early-career — Tuesday. A free panel with a former ASML chief executive, on your own campus.

Worth knowing

Soup Talks is waitlist-only. Wednesday's lunchtime session with Bob van Luijt shows as waitlist — a first edition in a small space, so the list is the only route in. Join it rather than arriving at Sumatrakade at 11:30.

Wednesday is two events, not a clash. Soup Talks runs 11:30 to 13:30, Mindstone starts at 18:00 — the strongest single day in the window, and entirely doable.
